Welcome! (and an open invitation)

First things first: welcome to Missouri State all new students and welcome to the new semester for everyone else! English Society decided to create a blog to keep all of you in the loop about English Society events with a minimum of wasted trees and annoying emails (don't get us wrong... you'll still get the annoying emails, but maybe now they'll be shorter!) so consider this your hub for all things English Society.

We would like to invite everyone to attend a meeting this semester and get to know us. We need your talents, your energy, your input, and your company, so come and bring your friends. And no, we're not just for english majors.

Second things second: So you know what you're getting into, here's a brief, Q&A-style description of the ES.

What is the English Society?

The English Society is a gathering of people from all disciplines who are interested in literature, creative writing, literacy, censorship, TESOL, book discussions, and anything else related to the field of English. We're your club, so come by and let us know who you want us to be.

What do we do?

We do a variety of things, from community service projects involving literacy for adults and children, to book discussions, open mic poetry readings, poetry and fiction critique groups, social gatherings, public forums, presentations by experts in the field, and readings by visiting writers. Check back later for a full(er) list of past and possible activities.

When do we meet?

English Society meets on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in Pummill Hall, Room 105.
The first meeting will be on Wednesday, Septemper 10. We will alternate weeks between regular meeting and creative writing critique sessions, so come to the first meeting or check back here for more information.

Why should you come?

The English Society is a fun, easy way to network with people in your discipline, to get involved with the community, and plan the events you want to see happening on our campus. We hope to see you soon!
